In order for energy conservation to take place, you must first find out where you are losing energy in your home so that it can be fixed. There is a lot of advice and information on the internet about how to perform an energy audit on your own. Here are some simple steps that you can follow:

Locate Air Leaks

Check to see if air can flow through these spaces:

  • Electrical outlets
  • Switch plates
  • Window frames
  • Baseboards
  • Weather stripping around doors
  • Attic hatches
  • Wall- or window-mounted air conditioners.

Check to see if caulking and weather stripping are in good condition.

If you can see daylight around a door or window frame, then you have energy leaks. You can usually seal these leaks by caulking or weather stripping them. You may also consider replacing your old windowswith energy efficient windows.

Check Insulation

Check the attic hatch to see if it has enough insulation; is weather stripped, and closes tightly. Make sure that the attic vents are not blocked by insulation. You should also cover the entire attic floor with at least the current recommended amount of insulation.

Taking care of your HVAC

Have your heating and cooling equipment inspected and cleaned by a professional annually. If you have a forced-air furnace, check your filters and replace them about once every month or two, especially during periods of high usage.

Inspect your lighting

Check the wattage size of the light bulbs in your house. You can usually get by with a 60 or 75 watt bulb in most spaces. Replacing the higher wattage bulbs will save on your electricity usage. You can also use the compact fluorescent bulbs that can last up to several years. Check to see if your electricity provider offers any incentives for using compact fluorescent light bulbs.
