You typically don’t think about your windows until you have a reason to. Unfortunately, many times that means an accident or storm damage, and other times it might be energy inefficiencies. Not to mention that new windows are sealed to keep air and dust out – a great solution for someone with allergies. What are the measurements?
Before you head to the home improvement store, measuring your window correctly is essential. A professional remodeler will do this for you, but it’s always helpful to understand what’s going on. You may even want to keep these measurements for your records or for window treatments.
A window is encased in its own structure and then fitted into the dimensions the original builder created. You have to take this into account before you start measuring. Windows are measured from the inside and installed on the outside. If you do it the other way around, the window simply won’t fit.
Start by measuring the width. Measure from seam to seam on three different places on your window. Why three? For accuracy – redoing these figures can mean a lot of wasted time and resources. You want to make a note of the top, middle and bottom widths. The measuring tape should stretch from where the seam meets the molding each time. Take off a quarter of an inch to account for the top of the window you can’t see.
You’ll record three numbers for the height as well: far left, center and far right. With the window open, place the tape inside the stool (the inside window ledge) and measure to the top of the seam which is located between the jam and the stop. The stop is nailed into your header and so you’ll need to take off a quarter inch for these measurements as well.
